Permanente e transitorio
[2ch, 2015] 7:10
In Edward Albee’s play “Zoo Story” the character Jerry says the following:
“I am a permanent transient, and my home is the sickening rooming-houses on the West Side of New York City, which is the greatest city in the world. Amen.”
The composition explores two seemingly opposing concepts: permanence and transience. The piece continuously guides the audience through virtual spaces featuring unexpected and articulated sound gestures with contrasting attributes. Several impact sounds were created and classified as “transitori” based on their dynamic and spectral envelopes. Resonant frequencies were then extracted from the so-called “impact” materials to produce the “stable sounds” or “permanenti.” The latter were further processed using pure synthesized sounds to establish reciprocal or ambiguous “Färben” recognition zones/sources between the permanent and transitory materials.
The composition has won the Third Prize at the “SIME 2017” Electronic Music Contest (France), the First Prize at the international electroacoustic music contest “EFME 2016” (Argentina), and was the Winner of the International Electroacoustic Contest “El laboratorio del espacio 2016” (Spain). It was also selected as a finalist at GRM’s “Banc d’Essai 2016” (Paris) and the International Electroacoustic Music Contest “Taukay 2016” (Italy). Additionally, the piece has been featured in festivals and calls for works such as the “New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival 2017,” “Festival 5 Giornate 2017” (Italy), “Muslab 2016” (Mexico), “influx – L’Espace du son” (Brussels), “SPECTRA festival” (Malaysia), “EMuFest 2015” (Italy), and “Concerti di Primavera 2015” at the University Roma 2, Tor Vergata (Italy).
